This article teaches you how to unformat partition in Windows 11. Follow the tutorial, you can unformat Windows 11 partition and recover the formatted files and documents.
Unformat comes from format. Usually people format partitions for various kinds reasons, and after the format, without file pre-backup, people want to un-format the partition and make every file and document back. In fact, un-format is unavailable at all, but I can offer you some skills to recover the files, which you need, from formatted partitions. This is a kind of unformat technology.
Why formatted partition can be unformat?
There is a FAT and a DIR in each partition.
For FAT. Because the hard disk stores the connection information between the segments (that is, FAT), when the operating system reads the file, it can always accurately find the position of each segment and read it out correctly. In order to achieve chain storage of files, the hard disk must accurately record which clusters have been occupied by the file, and must also specify the cluster number of the next cluster that stores subsequent content for each occupied cluster. For the last cluster of a file, it is necessary to indicate that this cluster has no successor clusters. These are all stored by the FAT table. There are many entries in the table, and each entry records the information of a cluster. Due to the importance of FAT for file management, there is a backup of FAT, that is, the same FAT is built behind the original FAT. All items in the newly formed FAT are marked as “unoccupied”, but if the disk is partially damaged, the formatting program will detect the damaged clusters and mark them as “bad clusters” in the corresponding items. Will use this cluster again. The number of FAT items is equivalent to the total number of clusters on the hard disk, and the number of bytes occupied by each item should also be adapted to the total number of clusters, because the cluster number needs to be stored in it.
For DIR. DIR (Directory) is the root directory area. Immediately after the second FAT table (that is, the backup FAT table), it records the starting unit of each file (directory) under the root directory and the attributes of the file. When locating the file location, the operating system can know the specific location and size of the file in the hard disk based on the starting unit in the DIR and combined with the FAT table.
When you are formatting the partition, quick format, the format command will erase the data in FAT and DIR. All files and documents are still locating at DATA section, waiting for being overwritten.
So, if you want to unformat the formatted partition, no technology can un-erase the data of FAT and DIR, but technology can seek the files and documents in DATA section.

There are two preconditions that you must follow:
- When you were doing partition formatting action, you are using “QUICK FORMAT” instead of “FULL FORMAT”. Because full format erase every thing in that partition. And you are no longer able to recover the files and documents in this partition.
- After the partition format, you don’t put anything into this partition. Otherwise, the original files may be overwritten by the new files.
