  1. How to determine whether the product key can be transferred on Windows 11

Microsoft uses different channels to distribute Windows 11 licenses, but consumers can only obtain licenses through two channels, retail and original computer manufacturer (OEM).

If you have purchased a retail license for Windows 10, you will have the right to transfer the product key to another computer. If you plan to use a retail copy to upgrade from Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or Windows 10 to Windows 11, you can also move the product key to another computer.

Generally speaking, as long as you disable the previous installation, there is no limit to the number of times you can transfer the license, so you will not use the same product key on multiple systems. The only problem is that sometimes you may encounter activation errors, and you may not be able to resolve these errors until you directly contact Microsoft support and explain the situation.

If you have a computer with Windows 11 pre-installed, such as Surface Laptop 4 or Dell XPS 13, then you are dealing with an “OEM” license. In this case, the product key is not transferable, and you must not use it to activate other computers. In addition, if you upgrade from Windows 11 Home Edition to Windows 11 Professional Edition and purchase the upgrade through the Microsoft Store, you can transfer the license to a new computer because the product key will be converted into a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

  1. How to transfer the product key to a new PC on Windows 11

On computers with a Windows 11 retail license, the product key can be transferred to the new computer. Simply delete the license from the system, and then you can apply the same key on the new computer.

(1) Deactivate the old Windows 11 computer

To delete the product key on Windows 11, use the following steps:

Open Start, search for CMD, right-click on the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command and press Enter:

slmgr/upk

Tip: If you do not see the “Product Key Uninstallation Successfully” message, you may need to run the command multiple times until the message appears.

Type the following command to clear the license from the registry and press Enter:

slmgr/cpky

After completing these steps, you can use the product key to activate the same version of Windows 11 on the new system.

Although the above operation will uninstall the product key, the process will not remove the activation from the Microsoft server. Instead, the process will prevent the detection of using the same product key in multiple computers, allowing you to reactivate another computer.

If the computer is not connected to the Internet, then you do not need to perform these steps, because you should be able to use the product key on the new system without problems.

After deactivating the previous installation, you can manually activate the new installation using the product key. Or, if the manual process does not work, you can contact Microsoft support for assistance.

For example, if you delete the Windows 10 Professional product key, you can only use it to activate another Windows 10 Professional installation. You cannot use the Pro license to activate a machine running the home version, and vice versa.
